Locker Room Maintenance Checklist: Daily, Weekly and Monthly
Locker rooms combine everything that's hard about facility cleaning: water everywhere, heat, heavy traffic, and members who notice every hair in a drain. Here is a checklist that covers the daily routine, the rounds, and the jobs that only come up once a week or month.
Opening (before the first member arrives)
- Air check: ventilation running, no musty or sewer odors from showers, steam room or sauna
- Amenities: restock vanity items; hair dryers plugged in and working
- Towels: clean towel shelves and carts full; hamper bins empty
- Safety walk: no standing water or slip hazards; no burned-out lights
Wet areas
Showers and toilets
- Mop and wipe down shower floors, walls and fixtures with an anti-fungal disinfectant
- Pull hair and debris from shower drains
- Refill body wash, shampoo and conditioner
- Disinfect toilets, urinals, handles and stall doors; restock paper
Hot tub
- Test free chlorine, pH and temperature and record the results (see Hot Tub Safety Checks)
- Skim the surface and wipe the waterline tile
Steam room
- Hose and scrub tile benches and floor with a surface disinfectant
- Clear the floor drain; check the steam nozzle for mineral buildup
- Confirm the room temperature is in its normal range
Sauna
- Wipe benches with a damp cloth and a mild, wood-safe cleaner (never soak raw sauna wood)
- Inspect the rocks and heating element for damage or foreign objects
- Confirm the thermometer and hygrometer are working
Rounds through the day
Four times a day is a good default:
- Towels: collect used towels from hampers, benches and wet areas; restock clean ones
- Floors: squeegee or dry-mop standing water in walkways and the vanity area
- Trash: empty bins before they overflow; pick up bottles, wrappers and left-behind items
- Spot clean: mirrors, sinks and counters free of water spots and hair
Closing
- Spray and wipe locker doors, handles and benches with a broad-spectrum disinfectant
- Mop all tile floors with a commercial fungicide and disinfectant, including corners and grout lines
- Turn off steam and sauna heaters; confirm the hot tub area is clean
- Run the last towel loads; fold and store dry so nothing sits damp overnight
Weekly and monthly
- Weekly: scrub shower walls and floors to remove soap scum (two or three times a week in busy months); deep-clean grout; descale shower heads
- Monthly: steam generator check per manufacturer guidance; hot tub filter cleaning; review lighting, locks and hinges
